Government Responsibility to Humanitarian Aid

It is arguable whether the role of government is to set an example for social responsibility for the underserved and underprivileged. It certainly seems that this is the crux of the issue when it comes to partisan politics in the United States. Unfortunately as the political parties debate what responsibility the government plays, the needs of the poor go unmet and unaddressed.

 

The Christian mandate to care for the poor and the needy exists in spite of the argument and most churches have some sort of humanitarian program

 

Two concepts guide my political decision-making: agency and compassion. Does it relieve or contribute to the suffering of a demographic? Depending on the answer, you’ll know where my sentiments will fall. Does it interfere with the freedom to make thoughtful decisions for one’s self? You’ll have the answer.

 

Because of these guiding principles, Mormon to their core, I have a difficult timing choosing a political party. It is for this reason that I maintain my independent status and vote according to my conscience. So often however, these concepts, though they may be at stake, are not central to the debates
