Update–First Edition of Words of Wisdom is Now Available!

Updates: We are also excited to now have three available formats–one for self-printing, one to download for an e-reader, and one you can purchase at cost through Lulu that is professionally bound. We have also made a small change that was brought to our attention (thanks!), and the updated files are available below.

We are very excited to announce that the first edition of Words of Wisdom is now available! We have been working really hard to get it done so it can be used as Mother’s Day presents for the women in your lives.

From the Introduction:

Throughout Relief Society’s history we have had remarkable women leading and teaching us. Recently, General Relief Society President Julie Beck encouraged us to learn more about our history and get to know the words of women who came before us. To this end, we started searching for the voices of women, about women, and for women. Unfortunately, it can be hard to find their voices in Church curriculum and manuals, which inspired us to compile quotes on a variety of gospel subjects. By making these quotes accessible in this booklet, we can better follow our leaders and learn from our history.

In this booklet, you will find quotes that speak to our hearts the good news of the gospel. They uplift and encourage us on our sometimes difficult paths. We hope you will find the Spirit here as we have. This quote book is intended for private use. It can also be used to prepare talks, lessons and Family Home Evenings or in personal study.

We’d like to thank Galen Dara Smith for her beautiful cover art, “Sisters.” We feel it embodies the love and sisterhood that we share in the Relief Society and that you will find in the pages of this booklet. (You can order prints from her Etsy store). We also thank the volunteers who responded to our Call to Action and contributed many of these quotes. Please continue to submit quotes for further editions to

Format Option One: Self-Printing:

The inside of the book is formatted as booklet, which means that the page order in the PDF looks a bit odd. However, if you print on both sides, the pages will magically be in the right order to either fold in half and staple to the cover or cut in the middle and spiral bind to the cover. You may need to flip on the long or the short side depending on your printer, so it might be helpful to test out a couple of pages before printing the entire document.

Since some home printers are not able to print in the bottom half inch of the page, we have two different PDF formats–one for those printing from a standard home printer and one for those printing from a more professional printer.

There are three cover options: one for those using a home printer, one for those using a professional printer, and one with a white instead of blue back page for those who do not want to use as much ink but who are using a professional printer. We recommend you print the cover on slightly heavier paper if possible.

Format Option Three: Order a Professionally Printed Copy at

We are very excited to offer a paperback, professionally bound copy at cost (plus shipping) from I got the first shipment yesterday and I am still blown away by the quality–especially for the price, which is $3.76. There is a minimum shipping charge of $3.99, after which shipping costs are calculated by weight. This seems to be an especially fantastic price, since the quotes we got from the bigger office and printing stores were between $11 and $12 for a spiral bound copy (as opposed to a paperback “perfect bound” copy) and the print quality is much better at Lulu.

Again, we are making these copies available at cost for purchase directly from Lulu. We are not profiting at all from the purchase of these copies. We only want to make them available through Lulu because the costs (both monetary and time) seem to be much lower and the quality is much higher. These are not intended for commercial use or to be sold or resold for a profit.

These copies can be purchased here. Lulu also has some additional discounts and specials posted here periodically, which may help to save more money.

Words of Wisdom

“Some of our greatest learning experiences will come as we give compassionately of ourselves. We may forget to be compassionate, but God never will. It is important for us to remember that this is a significant part of our human experience. In fact, it seems to be that, of all our learning, that which we obtain by way of giving compassionately is the most significant learning we ever do. … The work of compassion in Relief Society has been both consistent and adaptable over the years. As new needs arise among our people, the work of the Relief Society is modified to meet those needs. So today, as a worldwide organization, our purpose exists as it always has: to encourage us as women in the compassionate work characterized by the Prophet Joseph Smith as ‘according to your natures.’ ”

Barbara Bradshaw Smith, January 26, 1922 – September 13, 2010

Words of Wisdom

“The whole gamut of human endeavor is now open to women. There is not anything that you cannot do if you will set your mind to it. I am grateful that women today are afforded the same opportunity to study for science, for the professions, and for every other facet of human knowledge. You are as entitled as are men to the Spirit of Christ, which enlightens every man and woman who comes into the world (see D&C 84:46).

“You can include in the dream of the woman you would like to be a picture of one qualified to serve society and make a significant contribution to the world of which she will be a part. Set your priorities in terms of marriage and family, but also pursue educational programs which will lead to satisfying work and productive employment in case you do not marry, or to a sense of security and fulfillment in the event you do marry. Education will increase your appreciation and refine your talent.”

President Gordon B. Hinckley, “Words of the Prophet: Seek Learning,” New Era, September 2007, p. 2-5.

Words of Wisdom Description

One of the first action-based projects at LDSWAVE is creating a book of quotes about gender equality and the LDS church that can be easily accessed and utilized in church settings as a flip book or as an iPhone app. It is meant to be used as a resource for the empowerment of women and the inclusion of their voices.

We love and appreciate our leaders who speak about gender equality and we want to promulgate these ideas throughout our local wards and stakes. Our hope is that by using readily accepted sources about this topic we can reach more traditionally minded members and promote our mission to educate and encourage gender equality within the church.

Also, we feel deeply that women’s voices need to be featured and highlighted. When we hear women quoted as leaders with valuable insights, we value ourselves more.  When we hear these women held up as spiritual leaders, we envision what we ourselves are spiritually capable of. When we see these women acknowledged and appreciated for their insights, we know that we do indeed have important and valued roles to play in the Church.

Have you ever been in church and heard something that didn’t feel right and you know there is the perfect quote that would adequately express what you are trying to say from a source everyone would value, but you just don’t have it at the moment? That is the problem that we are trying to solve with our Words of Wisdom project.

We are trying to collect and organize uplifting and inspiring quotes that will be readily available and accessible whenever you need them. This is just one step in LDS WAVE’s goal in taking actionable steps toward gender equality in the church.

1)      We will provide the finalized version of this quote book online for you to print for FREE!

2)      Each month we will research the correlated church manuals and highlight one quote that would benefit the lesson discussions. We will post this quote visibly on our website AND

3)      Challenge each person to find a way to use this quote in their meetings

4)      Also, we will make specialized versions of these quote books to give as gifts for special holidays, such as Christmas and Mother’s day

5)      We will challenge each person to suggest to their bishop to give the gift of inspiring quotes about and from women rather than the typical flower or chocolate on Mother’s day Sunday.

We hope you will benefit from the inspired words of women and about women.
